Flying With a Mobility Scooter: All 6 Major US Airline Policies Compared
The short version
- The 100 Wh and 160 Wh limits you see everywhere do not apply to mobility scooters. Those are the rules for laptops and cameras.
- For mobility devices the number that matters is 300 watt-hours — and even that only applies when the battery has to be removed.
- Alaska is the strictest: a battery that can't be easily removed is refused outright, and the label must be legible and in English.
- Delta is the most permissive on batteries but the only one with a genuinely mandatory form.
- American publishes no watt-hour limit at all for mobility devices and tells you to phone instead.
- Every airline must carry your device free of charge, and if they damage it, compensation is based on what you paid — not baggage limits.
We built this guide because the advice online is genuinely bad. Search for mobility scooter battery rules and you will be told, over and over, that your limit is 100 or 160 watt-hours. Then you arrive at the airport with a 262 Wh scooter battery and get waved straight through — or, on a different airline, turned away for a reason no article warned you about.
Both outcomes come from the same mistake. The widely-quoted numbers govern consumer electronics. Mobility devices are covered by a separate part of the federal rules, and then each airline layers its own policy on top — and those policies differ far more than most travellers expect.
Below is every published rule from all six major US carriers, quoted directly from their own pages, with the federal regulation underneath. Where an airline does not publish an answer, we say so rather than guessing.

Read that table once and the strategic point becomes obvious: if you fly more than one airline, plan for the strictest one. A scooter set up to satisfy Alaska — removable battery, English label showing watt-hours, under 300 Wh — will clear every other carrier on this list. The reverse is not true.
The watt-hour rule everyone gets wrong
The 100 Wh and 160 Wh figures come from the FAA's general rules for portable electronics. Mobility devices sit under 49 CFR 175.10(a)(15)–(17), which splits the rules by a question nobody thinks to ask: does the battery have to come out of the device?
If the battery must be removed — because the device design doesn't adequately protect it — the FAA states:
"Lithium ion battery size is limited to 300 watt hours (Wh). One spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each may be carried in carry-on baggage."

If the battery is adequately protected and stays installed, the regulation sets no watt-hour limit at all. United is the only carrier that says this out loud:
"There is no watt-hour limit for the battery installed in the device."

Two rules apply everywhere, without exception:
- Spare batteries are carry-on only. Never in a checked bag — and if your carry-on gets gate-checked, take the spare out and keep it with you.
- Lithium metal batteries are forbidden. These are the non-rechargeable kind. Every mainstream mobility device uses rechargeable lithium-ion, but it matters if you're buying second-hand.
How to work out your own watt-hours
If your battery shows only volts and amp-hours, Alaska publishes the arithmetic:
"Volts (V) x Amp-hours (Ah) = Watt-hours (Wh)"

So a 25.2 V, 10.4 Ah battery is 25.2 × 10.4 = 262 Wh. If the label gives milliamp-hours instead, divide by 1,000 first.
Worth knowing before you buy any scooter: Alaska addresses a marketing claim you will see everywhere in this industry —
"Despite the claims of some manufacturers, there are no “FAA-approved,” “ICAO-approved” or “IATA-approved” batteries, or approved batteries from other regulating agencies."

No agency certifies or approves individual batteries. What actually matters is whether your battery meets the published limits and can be verified at the counter. Treat "airline approved" on any product listing — including ours — as shorthand for "meets the published limits," not as a certification. Check the numbers yourself.
Alaska Airlines (and Hawaiian)
The strictest carrier of the six, and the most explicit. Alaska will refuse a device outright on grounds no other airline states:
"Mobility aids where the battery is fully enclosed and can't be easily removed, or the mobility aid has a battery that exceeds 300 watt-hours will not be accepted for transport."

"The battery must be easily removed and transported separately as carryon baggage in the passenger cabin. The battery terminals must be protected from short circuit. There is a single battery size limit of 300 watt-hours (Wh). If the device utilizes two batteries, each battery cannot exceed 160 Wh. A maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spares not exceeding 160 Wh each may be carried onboard."

The labelling requirement is the one that catches people out. Alaska requires the battery's rating to be visible, and the label to be readable:
"The battery's size in watt-hours must be displayed on the battery, or the battery should be labeled with its voltage and amp-hour (or milliamp-hour) ratings to allow for size calculation."

Alaska also states that the battery label "must be legible and in English," and lists "batteries labeled in language other than English" among the items it does not accept. If your scooter's battery carries a label in another language, photograph the manufacturer's specification sheet and bring it.
The device also needs a single physical means of power disconnection — a removable key, an on/off switch secured to off, a quick-disconnect joystick, or a removed battery with isolated terminals.
Alaska's per-aircraft limits — the most useful table any airline publishes

Note the E175 restriction: that aircraft "can accommodate only one (1) battery-powered mobility aid weighing over 50 lbs. per flight." If your scooter is under 50 lb, this limit doesn't apply to you — a real advantage of an ultralight device on regional routes.
Practicalities: a personal wheelchair "can be checked at the ticket counter or the gate free of charge," and is returned at the destination gate or connecting airport. Alaska asks you to arrive at least two hours before departure and provides a Mobility Aid Information Form. Accessible services: 1-800-503-0101 (dial 711 for relay).
Southwest Airlines
Nearly as strict as Alaska on batteries, and the clearest on device size.
"There is a single battery size limit of 300 watt-hours (Wh). If the device uses two batteries, each battery cannot exceed 160 Wh."

Southwest adds a requirement worth checking before you buy any scooter: "The battery must be easily removeable without the use of tools."
Hard size and weight limits:
- Cargo compartment doors measure 48" wide × 35" high
- Devices exceeding 34" in height, or 45" in width or depth with parts removed, "will not be accepted for travel"
- Devices over 500 pounds are not accepted
One inconsistency worth knowing about: Southwest's help article limits width or depth to 45", while its own PDF form states the maximum as 45" wide × 34" high. If your device is close to either figure, call rather than guess.
Cabin storage: Southwest is the only carrier that guarantees a closet on every aircraft — "Each plane has a wheelchair storage compartment to stow at least one standard-size, adult, collapsible wheelchair on a first-come, first-served basis." That is for manual chairs; your powered scooter still goes in the hold.
Fees are explicitly waived: "Wheelchairs and mobility aids checked by Customers with disabilities are exempt from our standard checked baggage fees." You choose gate or bag claim for the return. Southwest publishes a Wheelchair / Mobility Aid Information Form (revised 08/2025) and asks you to complete it before you arrive.
JetBlue

"Any lithium-ion battery that's been removed from an assistive device must be transported in the cabin with the terminals properly protected, but may not contain more than 300 watt hours or 25 grams of lithium."

Removal is conditional rather than automatic: "If a wheelchair or mobility device does not have a protective housing for a lithium-ion battery, the lithium-ion batteries must be removed." JetBlue also commits not to take your device apart unnecessarily — it "will not disassemble any battery powered assistive device when the battery is non-spillable unless directed to by our HazMat specialists."

A benefit worth claiming: if your device won't fit the aircraft on your preferred flight, JetBlue will refund the fare difference for the flight you had to take instead. Request a CRO and supply your device's dimensions, a screenshot of the fare you couldn't book, and the itinerary you did fly.
There is no published notice deadline — JetBlue asks you to add a Special Service Request via Manage Trips, and notes "there's never a fee to add an SSR to an existing booking." You choose gate or bag claim for the return.
United Airlines
United publishes the clearest explanation of the underlying federal rule of any carrier.
"If you have a collapsible mobility device, the battery must be removed and can't exceed 300-watt hours. A maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300-watt hours or two spares not exceeding 160-watt hours each must be carried on."

For non-collapsible devices United applies a practical test: "Batteries will be left attached whenever the scooter and/or wheelchair will fit upright through the aircraft bin door." If it doesn't fit, staff will ask you how to disassemble it — which is why knowing your own device matters.
United is the only carrier that requires advance notice:
"Advance notice of forty-eight (48) hours is required for powered wheelchairs and you must arrive an hour earlier than the published airport check-in processing time of your originating airport if you'll be traveling on an aircraft of 60 seats or less."

United states the fee position plainly: "We'll accept your wheelchair or other assistive device in addition to your checked baggage allowance at no additional charge." Every aircraft has "adequate space to accommodate at least one adult-sized wheelchair," and folding chairs get preboard priority.
Damage claims have the tightest clock of any airline here: file a report at the airport immediately on landing, then email "within 24 hours of arrival for domestic flights, and within seven days of arrival for international flights." Assistive Device Desk: 1-866-261-2395.
Delta Air Lines
The most permissive on batteries, and the only one where the paperwork is genuinely mandatory.
"Lithium-ion batteries have no restrictions. Follow the steps in our 'Bring Your Personal Wheelchair' section."

Delta permits the battery to stay installed where the device "must possess a defect-free battery in a rigid compartment that is integral to the device, as well as an effective method of preventing accidental activation during transport" — then adds, without elaborating, that "There are still circumstances that require the battery be disconnected." Delta does not publish what those circumstances are. Travel able to remove your battery, and call 404-209-3434 if you need certainty for a specific route.
The form is required, not suggested:

It asks for battery type, a watt-hours figure, device dimensions and weight, your method of preventing accidental activation, and whether the device may be tilted or loaded on its side. Know your watt-hour number before you reach the counter.
Delta publishes a general cargo figure of 13" × 36" × 42" with the caveat "limits vary by aircraft," plus an interactive fit checker on its wheelchair services page — enter your folded height and width and it returns the aircraft that will take it. Notice is 48 hours recommended, and you should check in at the counter an hour early if checking a powered device. Cabin stowage is restricted to devices that are not battery-operated.
American Airlines
American publishes no watt-hour limit for mobility device batteries at all. That is the story. Instead:
"For battery operated mobility devices, contact Special Assistance to make sure the battery type is approved for travel."

The watt-hour figures elsewhere on American's site — under 100 Wh, 100–160 Wh, 160–300 Wh — govern spare and portable batteries generally, not wheelchair batteries. Don't assume they transfer.
Two things American does state clearly. Electric wheelchairs with spillable batteries are not allowed. And non-collapsible or battery-powered wheelchairs "can be checked at the ticket counter."
American's 737 fleet has the lowest cargo door of any aircraft in this guide:

Closets are available only on aircraft with 100 or more seats, holding one collapsible wheelchair. Detachable parts — footrests, joysticks, cushions — may come into the cabin and "won't count toward your carry-on baggage allowance."

Where we'd rather be honest than reassuring. The R3b's folded height of 18.1" clears every published cargo door figure above with room to spare. But Delta's general 13" × 36" × 42" spec has a 13" dimension that the R3b exceeds, and Delta says limits vary by aircraft. Run your actual routing through Delta's fit checker rather than assuming — particularly on regional aircraft, which are the real constraint on every airline.

Your rights — these apply on every airline
The Air Carrier Access Act gives you protections no airline policy can reduce.
Advance notice is limited by law. Under 14 CFR 382.27, the most notice an airline may require is 48 hours, and only for a short closed list — including an electric wheelchair on an aircraft with fewer than 60 seats. On a mainline jet, no notice requirement attaches at all. United's 48 hours and Delta's recommendation make your day smoother; they are not conditions of carriage.
Your device flies free. Assistive devices don't count toward baggage allowances or attract fees.
It has priority in the hold. Under 14 CFR 382.125, wheelchairs get priority stowage over other cargo. You are entitled to be told, before the cabin door closes, whether your device was loaded.
Gate return is your right. Devices are returned "as close as possible to the door of the aircraft" unless you asked for baggage claim.
Damage compensation is based on purchase price. Under 14 CFR 382.131, the basis is "the original purchase price of the device" — ordinary baggage liability caps do not apply.
Ask for a CRO. Every airline must provide a Complaints Resolution Official at the airport, in person or by phone, at no cost (14 CFR 382.151). A CRO can overrule other staff on disability matters, with the single exception of a pilot-in-command safety decision.
Two deadlines. File a written disability complaint with the airline within 45 days to preserve its obligation to respond. The DOT will refer complaints received within six months — airconsumer.dot.gov, or the DOT Disability Hotline on 1-800-778-4838.
Note: DOT's 2024 wheelchair rule added a 24-hour delivery standard for delayed devices and a loaner-notice requirement, but enforcement discretion notifications ran through 4 August 2026. Confirm current enforcement posture before relying on those specific provisions.
Pre-flight checklist that works on any airline
- Know your watt-hours. Volts × amp-hours. Write it down. Delta's form has a blank for it and Alaska will want to read it off the battery.
- Check the battery label is legible and in English, showing either watt-hours or volts and amp-hours. Alaska refuses batteries labelled in other languages. If yours isn't, bring the manufacturer's spec sheet.
- Print the airline's form — Delta, Southwest, Alaska and JetBlue all publish one. Delta's is mandatory.
- Measure your device folded, height and width, and compare against the cargo door table for your actual aircraft — not the airline generally.
- Pack spares in your carry-on, terminals taped or in original packaging. Never checked, on any airline.
- Carry detachable parts on — armrests, cushions, joysticks, bags. They don't count against your allowance.
- Arrive early. An hour before normal check-in on Delta and United; two hours on Alaska.
- Inspect before leaving the jet bridge. Report damage there, not at home. United and American both run a 24-hour domestic clock.

Is there such a thing as an FAA-approved battery?
No. Alaska states directly that despite manufacturers' claims, there are no FAA-, ICAO- or IATA-approved batteries. What matters is whether your battery meets the published watt-hour limits and can be verified at the counter.
What if the airline damages my scooter?
Report it before leaving the airport and ask for a Complaints Resolution Official. Compensation is based on the device's original purchase price, not baggage liability limits. United and American both require a report within 24 hours for domestic flights.
