Alaska Airlines Scooter Policy 2026: Battery Rules

The short version
- Alaska will refuse a device outright if the battery is fully enclosed or can't be easily removed. No other US carrier states this so plainly.
- 300 watt-hours maximum, or 160 Wh each if the device uses two.
- The battery must be removed and carried in the cabin.
- The battery label must be legible and in English. Labels in other languages are on Alaska's not-accepted list.
- Alaska publishes weight and size limits for each aircraft type — the most useful table any airline provides.
- Alaska states plainly that no FAA-approved batteries exist, whatever a product listing claims.
If you only prepare for one airline, prepare for this one. Alaska (which now includes Hawaiian) sets the tightest published requirements of any major US carrier, and a device that satisfies Alaska will clear everyone else. The reverse is emphatically not true.
The rule that gets devices refused

Read that as two separate refusal triggers. Over 300 Wh: refused. Battery sealed into the frame: refused, regardless of watt-hours. A perfectly compliant 200 Wh device with a non-removable pack still fails.
This is a buying decision, not a packing decision. If you expect to fly Alaska, check that the battery lifts out before you purchase the scooter.
The battery rules in full
"The battery must be easily removed and transported separately as carryon baggage in the passenger cabin. The battery terminals must be protected from short circuit. There is a single battery size limit of 300 watt-hours (Wh). If the device utilizes two batteries, each battery cannot exceed 160 Wh. A maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spares not exceeding 160 Wh each may be carried onboard."

Your device needs an off switch Alaska recognises
Alaska requires "a single physical means of power disconnection to prevent unintentional activation." It accepts any of these:
- A key turned to off and removed
- The on/off switch secured in the "off" position
- Quick disconnection of a wheelchair joystick
- Removing the battery and isolating the terminals
The label requirement most people fail

Alaska also requires that it be able to inspect the battery, that the label be legible and in English, and that the battery show no signs of defect or damage.
Alaska's other exclusions: hoverboards and self-balancing devices, skateboards, riding suitcases, inline and kick scooters, e-bikes, any mobility aid not being used by a guest with a disability, any device powered by damaged, defective or recalled batteries, and any device that cannot be disconnected from its power source.
How to work out your watt-hours
Alaska publishes the arithmetic, which most airlines don't:

Their worked example: 10 volts × 24 amp-hours = 240 watt-hours, which sits under the 300 Wh limit. If your label gives milliamp-hours, divide by 1,000 first. More on this in our guide to what 300 watt-hours actually means.
On "airline approved" batteries
"Despite the claims of some manufacturers, there are no “FAA-approved,” “ICAO-approved” or “IATA-approved” batteries, or approved batteries from other regulating agencies."

Worth quoting in full because it applies to our industry generally, ourselves included. No agency certifies individual batteries. Treat "airline approved" on any listing as shorthand for "meets the published limits," and check the numbers.
The aircraft table nobody else publishes
Most airlines give you one general figure and a shrug about aircraft variation. Alaska publishes actual limits per fleet type:

The E175 is the one to watch. It's the regional aircraft on many Alaska routes, it has the tightest limits, and it carries a restriction no other aircraft does: it "can accommodate only one (1) battery-powered mobility aid weighing over 50 lbs. per flight."
That's a first-come constraint, not a size one. If your device weighs over 50 pounds and someone else's already has the slot, yours may not travel with you. Alaska asks you to call 1-800-503-0101 (dial 711 for relay) to verify space.
An ultralight scooter sidesteps this entirely. Under 50 pounds, the rule simply doesn't apply to you.
At the airport
- Arrive early. Alaska suggests at least two hours before departure — longer than Delta or United ask for.
- It's free. "A personal wheelchair can be checked at the ticket counter or the gate free of charge."
- Detachable parts can come with you. "Detachable items such as seat cushions and footrests can be carried onboard or checked with the wheelchair."
- Gate return. Your device comes back at the destination gate or at a connecting airport.
- Bring the form. Alaska publishes a Mobility Aid Information Form to describe how your device is handled.
