Mobility Scooter Battery Watt-Hours

The short version
- The 100 Wh and 160 Wh limits you see everywhere are the rules for laptops and cameras. They do not govern mobility devices.
- For mobility devices the number is 300 watt-hours — and even that applies only when the battery has to come out.
- The maths is one line: volts × amp-hours = watt-hours.
- There is no such thing as an FAA-approved battery, whatever a product listing tells you.
- Spare batteries always travel in the cabin. Never in a checked bag, on any airline.
This is the single most misunderstood number in mobility travel, and the confusion is not the traveller's fault. Search for battery rules and you'll be told your limit is 100 watt-hours. Arrive at the airport with a 262 Wh scooter battery and get waved straight through. Both things happen, and the reason is that most of what's published is quoting the wrong rule.
Here's where the real number comes from, how to work out yours, and what actually gets checked.
What a watt-hour is
A watt-hour measures how much energy a battery holds. Not how fast it delivers it, not how far you'll travel — just the size of the tank.
One watt-hour is one watt of power drawn for one hour. A battery rated at 262 Wh could in theory supply 262 watts for an hour, or 131 watts for two hours, or 26 watts for ten.
Airlines and regulators care about it for one reason: it's a proxy for how much energy is available to be released if a lithium cell fails. Bigger tank, bigger event. That's why the limits are written in watt-hours rather than in pounds, amp-hours or range.
Where the 100 and 160 numbers come from
They're real limits — for the wrong category of thing.
The FAA's general rules for portable electronic devices set a 100 Wh ceiling for the batteries in your laptop, camera or power bank, with an allowance up to 160 Wh with airline approval. That's the rule almost every travel article quotes, because it's the rule that applies to almost every traveller.
Mobility devices are governed separately, under 49 CFR 175.10 and the FAA's dedicated guidance for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Different category, different numbers, and the difference is large.
The rule that actually applies
The FAA splits mobility device batteries by a question most people never think to ask: does the battery have to come out of the device?
If the battery must be removed
"Lithium ion battery size is limited to 300 watt hours (Wh). One spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each may be carried in carry-on baggage."

If the battery is protected and stays installed
Here the regulation sets no watt-hour limit at all. United Airlines is the only major US carrier that says this out loud on its own site: "There is no watt-hour limit for the battery installed in the device."
That's the piece almost nobody publishes, and it explains why two people with identical scooters can get different answers — one had a device where the battery stays in, one didn't.
In practice, the airlines that matter most have collapsed this back down. Southwest and Alaska both require removal outright, which means the 300 Wh figure is the one to plan around.
How to work out your own watt-hours
Alaska Airlines publishes the formula on its own accessibility page, and it's the clearest statement of it we've found from any carrier:
"Volts (V) x Amp-hours (Ah) = Watt-hours (Wh)"

Alaska even works an example: "10 volts multiplied by 24 Amp-hours = 240 watt-hours", and notes that 240 Wh sits below the 300 Wh single-battery limit.
If your label gives milliamp-hours instead, divide by a thousand first: "Volts (V) x Milliamp-hours (mAh) ÷ 1,000 = Watt-hours (Wh)".

That last row is the one to sit with. A high-capacity pack marketed on its range can put you over the line, and 20 Ah is not an unusual figure. Do the multiplication before you buy, not at the airport.
Reading your battery label
Alaska is the strictest carrier on this and the most explicit about what it wants to see:
"The battery's size in watt-hours must be displayed on the battery, or the battery should be labeled with its voltage and amp-hour (or milliamp-hour) ratings to allow for size calculation."

Two practical consequences.
The label has to be readable. Alaska requires it to be legible and in English, and lists batteries labelled in other languages among items it does not accept. If your pack carries a label in another language, photograph the manufacturer's specification sheet and bring it.
An enclosed battery can be a refusal on its own. Alaska: "Mobility aids where the battery is fully enclosed and can't be easily removed, or the mobility aid has a battery that exceeds 300 watt-hours will not be accepted for transport." Southwest adds that it must come out "without the use of tools."

No agency certifies individual batteries. When you see "airline approved" on a product listing — including on our own site, where we're working to reword it — read it as shorthand for "meets the published limits," and check the numbers yourself.
Three rules that apply everywhere
Spares are cabin-only. On every airline, without exception. Never in a checked bag — and if your carry-on gets gate-checked, take the battery out and keep it with you. Southwest adds a small mercy: an assistive device battery doesn't count toward your carry-on allowance.
Protect the terminals. Tape over them, or use the original packaging or a proper case. A loose battery contacting metal is the exact scenario these rules exist to prevent.
Lithium metal batteries are forbidden. These are the non-rechargeable kind. Every mainstream mobility device uses rechargeable lithium-ion, so this rarely bites — but it matters if you're buying second-hand or replacing a pack from an unfamiliar supplier.

If your label doesn't show watt-hours
- Look for volts and amp-hours and multiply. That's what the rule allows for.
- Check the charger. It usually states output voltage, which tells you the pack's nominal voltage.
- Ask the manufacturer for the specification sheet and carry a printed copy.
- Write the number down and keep it with your travel documents. Delta's mandatory handling form has a blank field labelled "Watt Hours" — you'll be asked to fill it in.
- If you genuinely cannot determine it, call the airline before you book. A device whose energy content can't be established is one an agent can refuse.
